Maintaining a clean community . . .

|
| Melville Street by Derek Harper |
As this shot of Melville Street shows, local residents are passionate about ensuring their Streets are
kept clean and tidy. However, whilst living at the sea side is a great pleasure it also means sea birds soon
find any rubbish that isn't properly secured in special animal proof rubbish sacks or left outside in dustbins that
have a lid. The gulls can easily tear thin materials such as plastic bin liners with their
beaks allowing waste and other rubbish to cause a filthy mess. This picture below shows what can happen when
sea gulls find bin liners with rubbish in it.

Scenes like these can be avoided
altogether if everyone makes sure they respect their local community and always use proper containers
for all their recycling materials and household waste and remember that Melville Hill is recognised as a place of
significant historic value and protected by the Abbey Conservation area. Household recycling and refuse collections take
place at Warren Road every Tuesday after 6am and every Wednesday after 6am in the rest of the community. Landlords are
being asked to ensure their new tenants have the right equipment with information about local refuse collections
and facilities when they take occupancy. Recycling and refuse containers can be obtained free of charge from Torbay
Council / Tor 2 on 01803 207205. The Council has powers of enforcement that may lead to a fine for non compliance. Satellite dishes for digital television services must not interfere with the street scene. Residents
need to be aware that it is important to contact Torbay Council planning department (website www.torbay.gov.uk ) before arranging for equipment to be installed on their property as aerials fitted
incorrectly will have to be moved at cost and inconvenience and can lead to enforcement action.
