Local Success and Future Plans

In five years we are proud to have contributed to significant improvements for the Community.

In 2007, a group of local people who care about the area wanted to try and heal our community from years of under investment and neglect.  Thanks to their passion, desire for change and willingness to work with Torbay Council, the Community Partnerships and other voluntary and statutory agencies we are now enjoying:

CCTV. Locals considered it was the most effective way to address crime and anti-social behaviour that blighted our community in 2007.  The former Avon and Somerset Police camera now at the junction of Melville Street and Warren Hill records information that local Police Officers can download
A community waste bin. This helps local people who struggle in the areas many small properties without anywhere to store their household waste in between weekly Council collections. The bin located at Melville Lane Car Park allows residents to deposit small amounts of their household waste. It is emptied on a daily basis by Tor 2

The Warren Hill planter was rescued four years ago by local residents who have transformed if from an overgrown rubbish tip to a space that now offers a splash of all year round colour and pleasure to people who live in this area. The Melville Hill Community group is hoping for a heritage grant to help OUR garden back to its former glory, complete with attractive iron railings to resemble its appearance in Victorian times. Reinstating the heritage of our community for future generations

Future Plans - Local Vision :
We hope to get a grant to re-instate the Warren Hill Planter to what it used to look like. This will include iron railings around the three sides. We want to create a space of enjoyment that reflects our areas rich heritage for future generations.

The Old Laundry Site in Rock Road has to be developed. It has been an eyesore for 40 years. The Melville Hill Community group has identiifed a developer willing to take this contaminated site from Torbay Council and make a development that can enhance the area such as flats for older people or even a hotel.
Come on Torbay Council everyone agrees your land needs to be developed. we have done all the hard work and found someone who can take it off your hands and make a huge improvement for our community and the centre of TORQUAY.
Just hurry up and sign it over please
!
Everyone who attended the Community meeting on 14th  January voted for action NOW

COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS from the meeting on 14th January 2012

CHILDRENS PLAY PARK -  A suggestion that a play park for children could be created in an area of Melville Lane Car park was firmly rejected at the Annual residents meeting on 14th January 2012. It was felt the area was too close to neighbouring properties and may attract problems from older children and youths at night. It was agreed that a play park would encourage children and families back to the area but it needs to be located in a different place. A suggestion that it could be included in a development at the Laundry Site was welcomed.

MELVILLE LANE UNDER COVER PASSAGE - Local residents considered whether the path from Melville Lane Car park to Melville Street should be closed. The Community has agreed that it should be closed as the stone walk way is worn and people can slip and hurt themselves, particularly when wet. Also, it has been used as a public toilet and quite recently some one was caught selling drugs there.
Torbay Council has identified the Owner and will reflect the Community's wish to see it closed with access restricted to people who need to use it for access to their homes.
